Paper: Infant Feeding Alters the Longitudinal Impact of Birth Mode on the Development of the Gut Microbiota in the First Year of Life
Paper on PubMed
The study looked at how birth mode and infant feeding affect the development of the gut microbiome during the first year of life. The researchers used shotgun metagenomic sequencing on infant stool samples and compared infants born vaginally or by C-section along with differences in breastfeeding duration. They found that breastfeeding could change some of the effects that delivery mode had on the gut microbiome.
I am interested in this study because I want to learn more about how different early-life environmental factors can work together to affect the infant gut microbiome. I especially like that this study looks at both birth mode and breastfeeding instead of only looking at one factor.
