What I Did
In this poster I was tasked to find a differentially expressed gene within the drosophila midgut then analyze it and its paralogs and orthologs. I picked the “y” gene which influenced pigmentation and mating behaviors. I then determined that it was expressed in the Fe region. I found its paralog “smp30” and found out they had a similar function of regulating ions. Within the discussion I cited numerous research papers and speculated on y’s reason for its expression in the Fe region.
How You Can Help
Research into the cluster family of yellow and trying to figure out the likely pathways in which dopamine travels through the midgut can be very interesting. Further confirming or denying whether y’s expression in the Fe region is similar to my speculation or not can be very insightful too. I have intense interest on what Y’s function beyond pigmentation is and how genes involved with melanogenesis can connect to things beyond exterior pigmentation.
